Seeking Experts on LGBT Issues for the Aging

As you may know, presidential proclamation has designated June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month in 2010 as in previous years. NOGLSTP-CR has been approached by Dr. Jaron Lockett, representing the Human Relations Committee of the National Institute on Aging, a major research component of the National Institutes of Health, in Baltimore, MD. They are very interested in bringing in experts who can speak on topics that affect aging LGBT populations, especially (but not limited to) biomedical researchers. Ideally, they want to bring people in to speak on Friday mornings in June, but they have some flexibility there. They also have travel funds available to bring people in from out of town. So, if you feel that you could contribute to this effort, please e-mail David Kaplan at DavidK93@gmail.com with a summary of your work or research, as well as the best way for Dr. Lockett to reach you. Please also feel free to forward this invitation to anyone you feel could present a relevant topic to the committee, whether or not they are local to the Chesapeake region.

Our Universes at National Museum of the American Indian

The National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals - Chesapeake Region would like you to join us on a trip to the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in Washington, DC, on Saturday, March 20. The museum has a permanent exhibit called Our Universes, which showcases indigenous peoples’ concepts of cosmology–their beliefs and philosophies concerning the nature of the universe. NMAI is part of the Smithsonian Institute, so admission is free. We ask you to RSVP so that we know to look for you at the museum.

We will be meeting at noon in the Mitsitam Café, the museum’s dining hall, for lunch. They have an impressive menu, combining traditional native dishes from the Americas with contemporary items that incorporate native “twists.” The NOGLSTP-CR officers will be wearing name tags to help you find us if you haven’t met us before. We plan to move on to the Our Universes exhibit between 1 and 1:30 pm, and then a general museum tour is available at 3 pm. We hope to see you there!

Panel at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute

The Gay-Straight Alliance at the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute has invited NOGLSTP-CR to hold a panel at the school, in which current high-school students can ask professionals and college students about what they can expect as they move on to college and the professional world. This is a great opportunity for us, because the entire student body at BPI is committed to the study of STEM topics. The GSA has spoken to two of BPI’s student groups, It’s Academic and Research Practicum, and those groups are eager to attend the panel. We are very eager to take advantage of this invitation to perform community outreach. The students will be encouraged to ask about how they can achieve their personal goals for academic and professional advancement in STEM fields, as well as about what it’s like to be LGBTA in an academic or professional environment.

We are holding the panel on Wednesday, March 3, at 3:15 pm, at Baltimore Polytechnic (http://www.bpi.edu/). We don’t know exactly when it will end, but probably between 4:30 and 5 pm. We already have two panelists, but we are looking for at least two more. If you are available to join us, please e-mail NOGLSTP-CR-owner@yahoogroups.com as soon as you can to let us know. We will then follow up with instructions for parking and access to the school building. While we will gladly welcome anyone who wants to serve on the panel, we are trying to achieve the maximum possible diversity from within the organization. So if you are something other than a white, male engineer, we hope you’ll give this invitation a little extra consideration.

da Vinci Exhibit at the Maryland Science Center

The National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals - Chesapeake Region invites you to join us to see a special exhibit about Leonardo da Vinci at the Maryland Science Center (http://www.mdsci.org/). The exhibit includes models of machines conceived by da Vinci as well as detailed scientific analyses of the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Leonardo da Vinci is considered one of history’s greatest painters and thinkers, the inspiration for the term “Renaissance man.” In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, he sketched designs for a helicopter, a tank, and a calculator, and he also outlined a theory of plate tectonics. Though da Vinci was secretive about his private life, which remains a topic of debate, he is generally accepted to have been gay.

Admission to the da Vinci exhibit ($6) must be bought with admission to the science center itself ($14.95). (These are the undiscounted prices for adults.) The officers of NOGLSTP-CR have secured several free passes for general admission, and we’ll be sharing the savings equally with all NOGSLTP-CR members in attendance (We’ll have membership forms on hand for anyone who wants to join the day of the event.). Tickets for the da Vinci exhibit are general admission (no timed entry). The science center is open from 10 am to 6 pm, and you may come and go as you please throughout the day. Since you will be paying for a full admission, we encourage you to enjoy as much of the science center as possible during the day. All are welcome to attend the event; the Maryland Science Center is very family-friendly with many exhibits targeted towards young children.

Prior to visiting the exhibit, we will go out for lunch at Regi’s American Bistro (1002 Light St., http://www.regisamericanbistro.com/index.html). We will meet in front of the science center at 11 am to walk over, or you can meet us at the restaurant at 11:15 am (In case we’ve already been seated, ask for the NOGLSTP-CR group.). NOGLSTP Annual Awards

As you may know, NOGLSTP hosts an annual nationwide awards program recognizing LGBT scientists and technical professionals who have made outstanding contributions in their field. Included in these annual awards are Scientist of the Year, Educator of the Year, and Engineer of the Year.

As part of our professional development vision, we would like to encourage nominations for these awards by members of NOGLSTP-Chesapeake Region. Nominees need not themselves be NOGLSTP members. The NOGLSTP webpage that describes the entire awards program (http://www.noglstp.org/?page_id=10) also includes biographies of recent award recipients and a downloadable nomination form.

Nominations can be made at any time and are officially due 15 November. The awards ceremony is held during the annual American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) convention (http://www.aaas.org/meetings/), which will be held 18-22 February 2010 in San Diego.

Chinasaurs at the Maryland Science Center

Chinasaurs is the largest-ever touring exhibit of Chinese fossils and dinosaur skeletons, and the exhibit also features ancient Chinese cultural artifacts. Last month at the Capital and Baltimore Pride Festivals, many people expressed an interest in the National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals - Chesapeake Region by joining our mailing list. Now that the dust has settled, the officers want to provide all of our current and prospective members, especially the most recent additions to our mailing list, an opportunity to network in a relaxing environment. Dinner with National Chair, 7/7/09

The officers of the National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals - Chesapeake Region have just learned that the National Chair of NOGLSTP, Rochelle Diamond, will be in Baltimore for a conference this coming week. We will be joining her for dinner this Tuesday, July 7, and all are welcome to join us. The dinner is informal, and no RSVP is necessary. We will meet at 6:30 pm for drinks at Grand Central (at the corner of Charles and Eager in Baltimore City), and then adjourn to nearby Minato (half a block north on Charles, on the right) for dinner at 7 pm. It should be easy to find our group at Grand Central on a weekday evening, even if you haven’t met us before, and the host(ess) at Minato will know where the NOGLSTP group is seated. If you plan to join us at Minato after 7pm, please drop a line to NOGLSTP-CR-owner@yahoogroups.com, so we can ask for enough seating.

This is a great opportunity for current and prospective members to learn more about what NOGSLTP does on the national level, and we hope to see you there. Pride Kickoff Barbeque, May 31, 2009

The National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals - Chesapeake Region has planned a fun start to June’s LGBT Pride Month with a Pride Kickoff Barbeque on Sunday, May 31, at the Annapolis home of NOGLSTP-CR member Lawrie Hollingsworth. This is a family-friendly event, so please bring your partners, children, and other family.

June will be a busy month for NOGLSTP-CR, with our presence at both the Capital Pride Festival on Sunday, June 14, and the Baltimore Pride Festival on Sunday, June 21. So to get everyone fired up, we’re firing up the grill! Lawrie has opened her home to us, and we’re going to have a great time. This will also be your first opportunity to sign up for a volunteer shift at one (or both!) of the Pride festivals. NOGLSTP-CR will provide basic grilling items (hot dogs, burgers, and veggie burgers–along with buns) and condiments (ketchup, mustard, and relish), and a couple of sides (probably potato salad and cole slaw). BYOB (including alcoholic beverages if desired, but always drink responsibly), along with anything else you’d like to grill and your favorite fixings. Please also bring a side dish or a dessert to share.

NOGLSTP-CR General Meeting and Indoor Health Presentation

The National Organization of Gay and Lesbian Scientists and Technical Professionals - Chesapeake Region is pleased to announce a general meeting and technical presentation on Monday, March 9. The meeting will take place at the Elkridge Branch of the Howard County Library, 6540 Washington Boulevard, Elkridge, MD 21075.

We will start with light refreshments at 6:30 pm, followed by the meeting agenda at 7pm. We will be briefly discussing upcoming NOGLSTP-CR events and recent NOGLSTP activities at the national level. We will then be offering a presentation on indoor (home and office) environments and warning signs you should be aware of. Daniel Ewald, an environmental scientist, will discuss health hazards commonly found in living and working spaces, focusing on detection and remediation of mold, asbestos, lead, radon, and on overall indoor air quality. And he promises he will try not to track any hazardous material into the meeting. The meeting is expected to end before 8 pm.
